In conversations with educators and school leaders across 20 different high schools across all provinces in South Africa, we repeatedly heard the same concern: too many learners are reaching high school without reading for meaning with the confidence and proficiency that secondary-school learning requires.

Reading has a place in everyday family life: choosing a recipe, working out the rules of a game, reading a message or discovering something about a favourite animal.
These moments give children a reason to read. They also create opportunities to explore meaning together, without turning every activity into a lesson.
Why it matters here
Every subject eventually depends on reading for meaning.
In conversations with teachers and school leaders across 20 different high schools, we repeatedly heard the same concern: too many learners are reaching high school without the ability to read for meaning confidently. At this stage, every subject depends on reading — not only English.
This is a recurring professional concern raised with us in conversation, not an independent or controlled study.

Why early foundations matter
South Africa cannot afford to wait until children are older to strengthen reading. The reading crisis doesn’t begin in Grade 4.
As children progress through school, reading becomes the gateway to every subject. Without strong early foundations, learners may struggle not only to read the words, but to understand, participate and reach their full potential.
Starbound cannot solve South Africa’s reading crisis alone. But we can do our part: giving one child at a time the skills, confidence and love of reading that can change the course of their learning journey. Because every stronger reader represents a future filled with greater possibility…
